NesNet and ISCFT are able to offer a range of courses for fishermen and netmakers, such as the course in fishing technology that we are currently running for a group of skippers and netmakers. Each course is designed around the needs of those attending - rigged to order, we can say. We are also organising courses in trawl model making so that netmakers can prepare their own flume tank models for testing. Each course gives you the opportunity to work to your own gear design and our instructors guide students through the process of setting up their own models, starting with reducing the design itself to the right scale for ISCFT's mini flume tank. Each student is helped through making the model and finally testing it in the tank to see how it performs at different towing speeds and with the opportunity to try different bridle rigs. Depending on the time available, it's possible to make changes to gear models to see if improvements can be made. The tank also offers the possibility of testing seine nets, purse seines and static gears to see how they perform with different hanging rates and in a tideway. Each course in gear model making lasts for five days. All materials are supplied, including the use of software for the design part of the course. An ideal group size if from two to five persons and we need around three weeks' notice to organise a course. This course has already been well attended by Icelandic skippers, many of whom have been able to take the knowledge they have gained back to sea to improve their gear. In addition to the software used on the course, we also offer a book of model making procedures in which all of the principles are explained. For more information, contact info@nesnet.is
