Day 1 Lectures about seine net fishing, undersea videos of fishing gears in use and video of fishing procedures on board. Discussion on fuel costs of seine net fishing compared to other methods such as trawling. Fishing methods and skills, as described by an experienced skipper. Introduction to Ósey seine net winches. Day 2 A day’s fishing with a seine net fishing boat, depending on weather conditions. The boat’s skipper ensures that there are explanations of methods as required. Day 3 Testing seine net models in the flume tank. Introduction to different approaches to seine netting, such as in Scotland and Norway, with material from those countries. Visit to a net loft to see seine net gear being made and to see the equipment and materials used for seine netting – everything from the winch to the codends. Day 4 Visit to fish auction and an introduction to the Icelandic auction system. Visit to the Fisheries Directorate for an introduction to the Icelandic fisheries management system. Visit to ports to see various seine net boats, with explanations from an experienced skipper. Visit to the Marine Research Institute for an explanation of the seine net research in progress, if the relevant people are ashore. Price for four-day course: €1400 for 1 to 4 participants. For additional participants, add €150 per person. Accommodation and meals are not included, with the exception of meals at Sudurnes Comprehensive College, which are included in the course fee. Transport for a group of up to four is included. For a larger group there will be the additional cost of a hire car. The organisers point out that trips to sea are dependent on weather and quotas, and can not guarantee that this will be possible although every effort is made to make sure this happens.
